Welcome to Christ Mertz Lutheran Church

Welcome to Worship

Good morning, and welcome to Christ Mertz Lutheran Church, wherever you’re joining us from today. Whether you’re here in the sanctuary or watching from home, we’re glad you’re with us for the 13th Sunday after Pentecost.

Today’s readings circle around a single image: the rock. In Isaiah 51, God calls the people to look back to “the rock from which you were hewn” — Abraham and Sarah, one couple who became a nation. In Romans 12, Paul asks us to offer ourselves as living stones in one body, each gift different, each member needed. And in the Gospel, Jesus asks Peter the question that still echoes through every generation of the church — “who do you say that I am?” — before naming him the rock on which the church itself would be built.

It’s also Backpack Sunday, so we’ll be blessing our students and teachers as they head back into a new school year — a fitting day to remember that God isn’t finished shaping any of us yet.

We worship this morning in the Service of the Word, with hymns old and new, prayers for our community, and a sermon growing out of these readings. However you got here today — out of habit, out of hope, or somewhere in between — pull up a seat, and let’s worship together.
