Christ Mertz Lutheran Church will host “A Way Through – Removing the Veil on the AA/Recovery Experience,” on July 28 at 7:00PM, an educational presentation designed to help community members understand what actually happens in Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and how the recovery process works.
The event will be led by Pastor Martin Milne, who brings both personal experience in recovery and specialized training to this important community conversation. As someone who has walked the path of recovery personally, Pastor Milne offers a genuine perspective on how the 12 Steps work and why AA meetings remain one of the most effective resources for people struggling with addiction.
“There seems to be still much mystery and misunderstanding around what happens in AA meetings,” said Milne. “People often have preconceived notions based on movies or TV shows, but the reality is very different. This time together will give folks an authentic look at how meetings work and why they’re so helpful for people in recovery.”
The gathering aims to serve multiple purposes: reducing the stigma often associated with addiction and recovery, making AA more approachable for those who might benefit from it, and helping friends and family members better understand what their loved ones experience in recovery meetings. Additionally, Milne will explore how the principles of the 12 Steps can offer valuable guidance for anyone seeking personal growth and spiritual development.
“We strive for spiritual progress, not spiritual perfection,” Milne explained. “The 12 Steps are a suggested path of recovery for anyone looking to live with more honesty, humility, and connection to something greater than themselves. Whether someone is dealing with addiction or just wanting to live a more meaningful life, these principles have something to offer.”
This presentation represents part of Christ Mertz Lutheran Church’s ongoing commitment to addressing real-world issues affecting the community with compassion and understanding. By hosting this event, the church hopes to create a more supportive environment for individuals and families affected by addiction.
Community members, healthcare professionals, family members of people in recovery, and anyone curious about the recovery process are invited to attend. The presentation will maintain the principles of anonymity central to AA while providing an authentic look at how recovery meetings function.
