“Though the parable from today’s gospel is often called the “parable of the wicked tenants,” its significance cannot be reduced to a single theme. Jesus narrates the in-depth salvific plan of God to send the Son to the world and how the story includes the cross, pain, suffering, and death of the sent one. The parable speaks at the same time about what might happen when power-hungry human beings imagine they can thwart God’s plan. God is still the owner of the vineyard, and of the whole creation. No one can claim privilege, priority, or power over God. The parable explains how Jesus responds to the question of use of authority and power (previous week’s gospel, Matt. 21:23) by showing that it has everything to do with enhancing the quality of life for all.” – sundaysandseasons.com
