“Jesus instructed his followers about the use of power and authority through his teaching, preaching, and healing. Every time Jesus used his authority and power, it was to affirm human dignity. Jesus humbled himself, becoming “obedient to the point of death—even death on a cross” (Phil. 2:8) because he heeded the call of love above all else. Jesus’ whole life was in concurrence with God’s purpose for which he had come into the world, emptying himself of all glory and power (Phil. 2:7) to take up the cross. The cross stands as a symbol of ultimate love—love for the other, love for the whole world—the true purpose for which God brought the whole world into existence.”
